Which Caribbean Island Is Right for Travelers from Minneapolis?

Erons Travel Advisory

By Gabriel Eronmosele, Erons Travel, Fargo, ND · Last verified September 28, 2026

Quick answer:

  • There is no single best island.
  • Choose by the beach you want, the hotel style, the flight schedule and the nights you have.
  • For quiet and design, look at Anguilla, Grenada or Barbados.
  • For families and easy flights, look at Turks & Caicos, Aruba and Cayman.

Midwest travelers often pick the first island with a fare from MSP, which is how you end up at the wrong all-inclusive on the wrong beach.

For a quiet couples trip

Anguilla, Grenada, Barbados and, if the budget is real, St. Barts each offer a different mix of beaches, restaurants and hotel scale. Smaller islands can feel calmer but take more effort to reach, so compare total travel time and the final transfer.

For families

Look at Turks & Caicos (Grace Bay, chosen carefully), Cayman and Aruba, which is known for reliable weather and easy logistics.

Confirm room configuration, beach conditions, kids’ programming and access to medical care. The Riviera Maya isn’t in the Caribbean politically, but from MSP it is often the better practical answer.

By ship

Treat the ship as the hotel, and choose itineraries that make ports more than a six-hour souvenir stop. Private transfers and a pre-cruise night in the embarkation city still apply.

Season and honesty

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November.

  • That doesn’t mean every island carries the same risk on every date, so check forecasts, property policies and insurance terms.
  • Not every island is unspoiled, and a $250 all-inclusive and a $1,400 boutique room are different vacations.
  • Insurance belongs in the first week of planning.

What changes for a Midwest departure

MSP has seasonal nonstops to a handful of islands, while Fargo and Grand Forks travelers will connect.

  • Compare arrival hour, the last flight home and whether both legs are on one ticket.
  • The best island for your dates can change when a seasonal nonstop ends.
  • In winter, choose a sensible first connection and avoid a return that depends on the last flight of the day.
