Maldives vs. Seychelles vs. Bora Bora: Which Trip Fits You?

Erons Travel Advisory

By Gabriel Eronmosele, Erons Travel, Fargo, ND · Last verified September 28, 2026

Quick answer:

  • Choose the Maldives for a resort-focused island stay.
  • Choose the Seychelles for beaches plus independent exploring.
  • Choose French Polynesia for lagoons and a Pacific route.

From Fargo or Minneapolis, plan at least 9 to 10 nights for the Maldives or Seychelles, because the journey and the final transfer shape the trip.

These three are shopped as the same overwater-villa category, and they aren’t.

Maldives

The Maldives has the strongest villa-and-reef product and the longest journey from the Red River Valley.

Getting there

  • Often 20+ hours of travel
  • Plus a seaplane, boat or domestic flight after arriving in Malé
  • Seaplanes don’t operate after dark, so a late arrival can mean a night in Malé before you reach the resort

What it costs

In our recent planning, a luxury week for two with business air often ranges from $20,000 to $40,000 or more; ask for a dated quote.

Seychelles

More land, more granite and nature, fewer identical water villas.

Who it suits

It suits couples who want to walk and explore beyond one resort.

Routing and island hopping

  • Routing usually runs through Europe or the Gulf.
  • Build ferries or domestic flights into the itinerary.
  • Give each island enough nights to justify the move.

French Polynesia

Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora can be combined, but each move costs time and money.

Combining islands

  • Two islands beat one rushed Bora Bora stay.
  • A ship-plus-land combination can avoid three hotel transfers.

Before you book

It’s shorter from the West Coast than from Minnesota.

  • Confirm inter-island flight schedules.
  • Confirm whether your resort includes boat transfers.

How to choose

  • Classic villa photos and an honest budget: Maldives
  • Nature and walking: Seychelles
  • Polynesia, and you can route west: French Polynesia
  • Only 8 nights from Fargo: we’d suggest Mexico, Hawaii or a single-stop European coast first

What changes from Fargo or Grand Forks

None of these is a quick beach hop. The domestic leg, long-haul flight and final transfer can consume much of two calendar days.

  • With one week away, compare the nights you’d actually spend at the resort against a closer Mexico or Hawaii stay.
  • Two weeks makes the journey easier to justify.

Any of the three. Choose by the experience and travel time you want.

Larger island resorts are. Adults-only hideaways aren’t.

How do we pick?
