Where Should You Go for a Winter Getaway from Fargo?

Erons Travel Advisory

By Gabriel Eronmosele, Erons Travel, Fargo, ND · Last verified September 28, 2026

Quick answer:

  • For a long weekend, choose Scottsdale or Phoenix.
  • For a beach week, compare Cabo, the Riviera Maya and the Caribbean.
  • With more time, Hawaii or Costa Rica work well.
  • Pick the place that gives you enough warm hours after flights, transfers and possible winter delays.

“Go south” isn’t a plan. Here is where we send Fargo and Grand Forks travelers, and why.

Four or five nights: keep it simple

Scottsdale and Phoenix: the fastest real warmth, with golf, hiking and restaurants. Not a beach.

Southern California: beach and city in one trip. Watch holidays and events, which affect hotel rates.

Check the actual FAR or GFK schedule before falling for a short stay that needs two connections.

A full week

Cabo: dependable desert weather plus ocean. The flight is longer than to Arizona and worth it for a week.

Riviera Maya: our frequent answer for Minneapolis and Fargo families who want a simple transfer and a pool that works.

Aruba, Barbados, certain Jamaica coasts: Caribbean water with less weather risk than the northeastern islands in peak storm season. Buy insurance.

Costa Rica in dry season: warm and green, though transfers are a big part of the trip.

Longer resets

Hawaii: works from MSP when you allow the extra hours. It isn’t a three-night trip from Fargo.

Canary Islands, Australia, New Zealand: only with the nights to justify the journey. Australia and New Zealand need 16 or more.

Where winter escapes fail

They fail in Minneapolis or Chicago at 10 p.m., not on the sand. We plan the first night on purpose, avoid the last flight of the day, and prefer both tickets on one airline.

What changes from Fargo–Moorhead and Grand Forks

For a long weekend, count usable hours.

  • A Thursday-night arrival and Monday-morning departure may leave only two full days.
  • For a school-break week, favor routes that give children more time at the destination than in transit.
  • Grand Forks travelers should compare GFK, FAR and a drive to MSP, especially when one route has no same-day backup.
