I don’t recommend a property I haven’t stood inside. So when I was in Rwanda recently, I drove up to Rebero to see Eagle View Lodge Kigali for myself. Here’s exactly what I found.
The drive up tells you something before you arrive. You leave the city behind, the road climbs, and the noise just falls away. By the time I reached the gate at 5,000 feet, Kigali was already spread out below me like a map. That elevation is the whole story here, and it delivers from the first minute.
Walking In
Reception opens straight onto the view, and the first thing that struck me was how the architecture leans into nature instead of fighting it. Bamboo-clad ceilings overhead. Hand-thrown clay pots overflowing with tropical greenery. Floor-to-ceiling glass framing the skyline like it was hung on the wall on purpose.
Walking from reception toward the rooms genuinely felt like stepping into the edge of a jungle, except a jungle suspended over a capital city. I’ve seen a lot of “boutique” lodges that use the word without earning it. This one earns it.
The Lounge and Terrace
I spent a while in the open-air lounge, and it’s the heart of the property. Deep bench seating, woven African textile cushions in terracotta and burnt orange, a thatched canopy overhead, and the whole of Kigali rolling out in front of you. Clay planters line the ledge. The light in the late afternoon was extraordinary.
This is where you’d want to sit with a coffee in the morning or a drink at dusk. I could see exactly why couples gravitate here.
The Rooms
I walked several of the room categories, and the range is wider than I expected:
- The Penthouse — the showpiece. Top floor, exposed bamboo, canopy bed, and glass on every side. This is the room that gets talked about, and standing in it, I understood why. It reads like a private retreat.
- Honeymoon Suite — clearly built for couples, intimate and quiet.
- Family rooms and apartments — more space, good for groups or longer stays.
- Studios and standard rooms — comfortable and design-forward without the premium price.
The thread running through all of them is consistent: warm wood floors, white linen, natural materials, and that ever-present view. Nothing felt generic.
The Setting, Practically Speaking
For planning purposes: the lodge is about 15 minutes from Kigali’s Central Business District, 10 minutes from the Convention Centre, and roughly 20 minutes from Kigali International Airport. It isn’t walkable to much, and that’s by design. A taxi via Move by Volkswagen or Yego Cabs runs from around $10, and the team arranges airport transfers.
The restaurant runs noon to 10 PM, with dining in the living area, on the balcony, or out on the patio deck. Even if you weren’t staying the night, it’d be worth booking a table to watch the city light up after dark. Reservations required.
My Honest Caveat
I want to be straight about this: my visit was a property scout, not an overnight stay, so I can’t yet speak to the full service experience from a guest’s chair. What I saw on the ground was warm and attentive, and the property itself is, without exaggeration, breathtaking. I’ll update this report once clients have stayed and told me how the rest holds up.
Who I’d Send Here
Based on what I saw in person, Eagle View Lodge is right for:
- Honeymooners wanting somewhere intimate and design-led to open a Rwanda trip
- First-time East Africa travelers who want a dramatic arrival without committing to a remote bush camp
- Couples after a quiet, romantic escape close to the city
- Design lovers who notice the difference between a room and a space with a point of view
If you need to be steps from nightlife or a business district, look elsewhere. If you want to feel somewhere the moment you arrive, this is a strong choice.
The Bottom Line
I walked in skeptical of the hype and walked out a believer in the property. The location is genuinely special, the design is considered rather than decorative, and the Penthouse belongs on any shortlist for a Rwanda honeymoon or milestone trip. Rwanda is quietly becoming one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations, and Eagle View Lodge is a real reason to get there sooner.
