If you’re planning a Rwanda trip from Fargo or anywhere in the Midwest, your first night in Kigali matters more than you’d think. I booked on a standard rate, not a comp or a press stay, so what I experienced is what any guest would. It’s a minor gesture, but it lands after a day of travel, and it tells you the staff pay attention.
The hotel is large and clearly built for international business and events, but it never felt impersonal. That’s a balance a lot of big-brand properties get wrong.
The Room
My room was genuinely spacious. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a clean modern palette, and I was able to get a room looking out over the city, which I’d recommend asking for. The bathroom was a real highlight: marble, well finished, and a step above what you’d expect even from a good hotel back home.
For most travelers, the entry-level guest room is all you need, especially for a night or two on either end of a safari. The suites add executive lounge access, which is nice but rarely necessary for a short stay.
Breakfast
Breakfast is usually included in the rate, and it’s excellent. This is a serious, well-thought-out spread. If you can think of a breakfast food, it’s probably on the buffet somewhere. After international travel, being able to eat exactly what your body wants is worth more than it sounds.
One detail that stuck with me: we had an early safari departure, and the staff packed us a breakfast-to-go box without being asked twice. That kind of quiet, attentive service is exactly what you want from a base hotel.
Location and the Feel of the Street
Here’s something that surprised me. The Marriott puts you right in the hustle of the city center, but the street directly in front of the hotel is calm and quiet. It’s surrounded by embassies, which gives the immediate area a serene, secure feel. You get the convenience of being central without the noise you’d expect to come with it.
For a Fargo traveler used to space and quiet, that combination of central-but-peaceful makes the adjustment easier.
